Outlining the Basics for Caregiving at Home

As we grow older, many of us are faced with the responsibility of taking care of older family members or loved ones. Many Seniors are choosing to age at home because it allows them to remain independent and in the comfort of their chosen residence.

Nursing home facilities and other assisted living programs are not for everyone. Often patients feel isolated and are unable to receive the one-on-one treatment that they deserve. Home health care offers Seniors the benefit of private healthcare with specialized Caregivers and the opportunity to age within the familiar setting of home.

Caregiving requires a lot of dedicated hard work and a multitude of complex tasks and responsibilities. You will want to help your loved one as much as possible but you’ll also need to consult professional home care services in Toronto such as the home healthcare service provider Integracare.

We provide professionally trained Caregivers, Registered Practicing Nurses (RPNs), and Personal Support Workers (PSWs) who come directly to your loved one’s place of residence to offer support of all kinds. They help your loved one with daily tasks such as cooking, dressing, and cleaning, and they also provide professional medical support when there are serious health concerns.

Integracare is based in the Greater Toronto Area and we’ve been helping Seniors and their families for nearly 30 years. Our mission is to provide compassionate person-based healthcare solutions to individuals who need it the most.

Aging is not an easy process. Of course, there are many physical limitations that occur as individuals start to age, but there is a lot of emotional turmoil involved as well.

Even if your loved one has a supportive and attentive family and friend group, you can’t always be there for them. You need to feel confident that your loved one is safe and looked after at all times. It’s extremely important to discuss your family member’s home healthcare plan early so that you can ensure they’re receiving the best treatment out there and that they’re happy and emotionally stable.

Everyone has unique needs but there are certain shared requirements and experiences such as the need for medical information, economic concerns, increased physical and emotional stress, and legal necessities.

It’s also critical to assess what type of home Caregiving services will be required and how to choose the best Caregiver for your friend or family member.

Consider how you can establish the best home health care plan for your loved one with these tips.

Get Everything in Order

Outlining the Basics for Caregiving at Home

Before you contact a home health service provider such as Integracare, be sure to know exactly what type of care your loved one needs.

Always ask for their opinion and to keep communication open so that you and your family can assess their needs and how can you help increase their quality of life.

Integracare is committed to bringing joy into the lives of all Seniors. We want to be able to maintain open dialogue with you and your family so that our Caregivers and staff can be at their absolute best and to deliver the highest quality in care and support.

There are some items such as financial and legal means that are difficult to discuss among family members. However, the reality is that in the long run, the more open you are and the sooner you address these issues, the easier it is on everyone involved.

There are critical things you can do to achieve optimal care for your family member or friend. Some of these include:

  • Speaking with their doctors and specialists. You need to clearly understand the nature and the extent of care that your loved one will need. Conduct some research online or contact a support organization in your city. Understand how their condition may change and progress over time, so you’ll know what kind of medical support you’ll need.
  • Establish a safe environment for providing care in your loved one’s home. Be sure to install safety grab bars in the bathroom and to remove any clutter so there is less chance of accidents and falls.
  • Engage regularly with any family members or friends in the wellbeing of your loved one, and what everyone’s concerns and availability to provide assistance are.
  • Investigate what is available in the community in regards to assistance programs as well as extracurricular activities your family member could join.
  • Ensure that medical records, bank, insurance, wills and power of attorney, and other investment information are all up to date. Make it clear how these will be updated on an ongoing basis.
  • Keep the contact information for doctors, specialists, dentists, legal advisors, and religious/ spiritual advisors clear and out in the open for your family as well as the Caregiver to see.

The main thing is to listen to your loved one so that you give them the best possible care available.

Communicate with Caregivers

Outlining the Basics for Caregiving at Home

The job of a Caregiver is not an easy one. They work hard so that your loved one is comfortable and feeling loved and appreciated at all hours of the day.

One of the benefits of aging at home is that you, friends, and other family members can speak with your loved one’s Caregiving team directly. You can form a strong relationship with them and as time passes they truly become extended family members and trusted confidants.

Once a solid relationship has been built between you, Caregivers, your loved one, and your family and friends, check in on the Caregiving team once in a while. Ask them about your loved one and how they’re doing.

Integracare treats its Caregiving staff with nothing but respect and we honour and respect each and every member of our team.  We value quality and excellence in home healthcare and have received multiple awards for providing outstanding service, including the 2018 Home Care Ontario’s Frontline Careworker of the Year.

Home healthcare gives you and your family peace of mind. Your loved one can enjoy the comforts of home and maintain a sense of dignity and independence. Create a checklist of things that matter to you and your family, and be sure to venture into this part of life’s journey prepared and with confidence.
